Jeep is a division of Chrysler, since 1987, and was first founded in 1941. Its headquarters is located in Toledo, Ohio. Jeep is the longest running off-road Sport Utility Vehicle manufacturing company in the world with Land Rover close behind. Jeep’s Bantam BRC became the official vehicle of the United States military for World War II along with the allied forces. The Bantam BRC was a 4 wheel drive light vehicle and also used by the military following World War II. This vehicle was produced in Butler, Pennsylvania. Jeep didn’t stop there in producing vehicles for the United States military. In 1965 Jeep manufactured the M715 army truck for exclusive use in the Vietnam War. It weighed in at 1.25 tons.
As evidenced in World War II and Vietnam, the Jeep was designed for off-road purposes as well as civilian purposes on the highways. Most Jeep models can be equipped with roll bars, a winch and extra lights. The winch is to help pull the vehicle out of the mud or a hole if it gets stuck during an off-road adventure.
There are two events that promote Jeep and allow Jeep owners to showoff their vehicles. The first is the Jeep Jamboree. Jeep owners bring their family and friends to see other Jeeps on display, off-road competitions and trail exploration. No spectators are allowed at these events, only the registered owners and their guests. There are an estimated 30 Jamboree events scheduled for the 2008 year. The second event is called Camp Jeep. This is a three-day event that includes multiple activities such as kayaking, fishing, mountain biking/climbing, tubing and arts and crafts. Top bands from around the country are also invited to play at this fair. There are man-made courses for Jeeps to peruse as well as scenic trails. There are Jeep 101 courses offered for first-time drivers but there is no camping at Camp Jeep. Everyone stays at a hotel or another camp ground.
Presently, Jeep only produces six models. They are the Jeep Wrangler, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Jeep Liberty, the Jeep Commander, the Jeep Compass and the Jeep Patriot. The Grand Cherokee and the Liberty are family sized vehicles with the Commander able to seat seven passengers. The rest of the models are small Sport Utility Vehicles being able to seat two to four passengers.
Jeep has designed different concept vehicles since 1958 when they released the DJ-3A Pickup. The decade of the 1960s was the only decade that Jeep did not release a concept vehicle. Jeep produced four concept vehicles in the 1970s, three in the 1980s, 12 in the 1990s and 17 in the 2000s. One interesting tidbit about Jeep that not that many people know about is that Jeep also produced a special vehicle in the year 1936. That special vehicle produced by Jeep is known as the Oscar-Mayer Wienermobile. The Oscar-Mayer Wienermobile is the most recognizable vehicles on the road today and in commercials today. It has been used as the main advertisement for Oscar-Mayer since it was manufactured in 1936.
